Adidas Gazelle typically runs slightly long versus a measured street size, so most narrow/average feet size down half. Wide feet often stay true to size because the last is still narrow through the forefoot — sizing down worsens pinch. Gazelle is not Samba. Samba is a width story (TTS length, skinny last). Gazelle more often feels a touch long in labeled length, so half a size down is the usual start for narrow and average feet who want lockdown.

The lab cut on this page (US men's 9) lists 27.2 cm internal length (272.4 mm), 91 mm forefoot, and 68.9 mm toebox. Adidas chart cm for that same US 9 is 26.2 cm of foot length. That gap is why Gazelle can feel long even when the cavity is not a wildly oversized last: the labeled size is matching a shorter foot-length number than the space inside. If your measured foot already hits the chart figure for your usual size, half down is a length correction, not a style preference.
Width is the override. 91 mm / 68.9 mm at US 9 is still a suede, narrow-leaning shape. Staying true to size when you are wide keeps the only volume you have. The converter on this page is set to −0.5 US for average or narrow feet. Wide feet should ignore the auto-downsize.
Suede softens a little. It will not turn Gazelle into a wide shoe. Thin everyday socks are the reference for the half-down call; thick socks may push you back toward TTS.
