Iron Rangers (8 last) are routinely sized about half down from Brannock or common sneaker sizes; narrow feet sometimes go a full size down. Judge fit at the midfoot/heel, not by pressing the tall toe box. Expect a long break-in.

Red Wing Iron Ranger (8085 and related) sizing is heritage-boot logic, not sneaker logic. Many wearers size down from their Nike size — often about a half to a full size depending on foot volume — because the last can feel long and the leather will pack out. Brannock or Red Wing’s own measuring guidance beats guessing from sneakers.
Width letters (D, EE, etc.) matter as much as length. An Iron Ranger that is “the right length†but wrong width will never feel right. Narrow heels with wide forefeet are a classic struggle on this last; try before you buy when possible.
Break-in is substantial: thick leather, stiff sole, weeks of molding. That is expected. Sizing up to skip break-in usually creates a sloppy long-term fit once leather yields.
Versus Classic Moc: different last and volume; do not assume identical downsizing. If you know your Iron Ranger size, use it as the anchor and only tweak for moc toe volume differences.
Sizing tips: get measured at a Red Wing retailer if you can. Between lengths, consider how much pack-out you want. Thick socks for winter may justify staying closer to a larger length only if width is already correct.
