The 2002R is a retro runner that people often size like a 990 or 574 — and that is where returns start. If you wear a US 9 in most Nike lifestyle shoes, start in a 9.

Width is the real fork. Most 2002R SKUs are standard D only, unlike the 574/990 width ladder. Slightly wide feet can stay TTS and let the mesh/suede soften; truly wide feet should half up rather than hoping a 2E appears. Sizing up when you do not need width creates heel slip.

Compared with the 9060, the 2002R is sleeker and less voluminous. Compared with the 550, it is more accommodating in the toe but still not a wide last. Use thick socks as a reason to half up only if you already live in them.

US 9 lab cut versus the New Balance chart

The lab cut on this page (US men's 9) lists 27.4 cm internal length (274.1 mm), 93.4 mm forefoot, and 67.2 mm toebox. The New Balance chart cm for that same US 9 is 26.3 cm of foot length. That gap is normal sneaker cavity versus a shorter foot-length label — not a reason to size down. The converter offset is +0 US: length matches; the snug story is padding.

Width still decides the half-up. 93.4 mm forefoot is a bit roomier than many terrace sneakers, but 67.2 mm toebox plus a padded collar is why 2002R feels tighter than a 9060 at the same number. Many colorways are D-width only. Stay true to size if you are average and let mesh/suede soften; half up when 2E is missing and you already know D pinches you. Heel slip after a half-up usually means you did not need the extra length.

The wear-box maps 2002R US 10 to 1906R US 10 (same length family — confirm N-Lock midfoot). 9060 is the roomier lifestyle sibling at the same length. Do not treat 2002R like 990v6 (this site lists 990v6 as running big) or like 550 (runs narrow). The lab numbers here are the 2002R cut only.
